Wedding planning has a well worn script by now. The bride gets a skincare timeline, a trial calendar, a whole checklist that starts months out. The groom, more often than not, gets a haircut two days before the wedding and calls it done.
That gap isn’t because grooms care less. It’s because nobody’s really laid out what actual pre wedding grooming looks like for men, so it defaults to “get a good haircut” and stops there. Which is a shame, because the camera is just as unforgiving on the groom as it is on the bride.
Start further back than you think
The instinct is to book everything the week of the wedding. But skin, hair, and beard all need lead time to actually respond to treatment. Rushing it the week before usually just means dealing with whatever your skin decides to do under stress, with no time to fix it.
Eight weeks out is a realistic starting point. Not for drastic changes, but for steady, low pressure prep that gives your skin and hair time to actually improve instead of just being tidied up at the last minute.
Your skin has been ignored longer than you think ?
Most men’s skincare routines start and end with a face wash, if that. That’s fine for an ordinary week, but wedding season brings extra stress, late nights, functions, travel, and rich food, all of which show up on your skin faster than you’d expect.
A basic routine of cleansing, a light moisturizer, and sunscreen, kept up consistently for a couple of months before the wedding, does more for how you look in photos than any single facial the week before ever could. If you want to add facials into the mix, start them early too, so your skin has time to settle rather than looking freshly worked on right before the big day.
The beard decision needs to happen way before the wedding?
This trips up a lot of grooms. Whatever beard style you’re planning to wear on the wedding day, you need to have committed to it and been maintaining it for weeks beforehand, not decided on it the night before. Beards take time to grow into shape, patchy spots need time to fill in or get worked around, and a barber needs a beard with some length and structure to actually sculpt it well.
If you’re planning to shave off a beard you’ve had for years, do that early too. A lot of men are surprised by how different their face looks, clean shaven, and finding that out on the wedding morning is not the moment for surprises.
The haircut trial is not just a bridal thing?
Brides get trials. Grooms usually don’t, and that’s a mistake. If you’re planning to change your hairstyle for the wedding, even something as simple as a different length or a fresh style, get it done and see it in photos a few weeks out, not for the first time on the wedding morning. Hair that looks good in the mirror doesn’t always translate the same way in flash photography or under function lighting.
Hands matter more than most grooms realize?
Wedding photos involve a lot of hand holding, ring exchanges, and close up shots you don’t think about until you’re looking at the album later. Rough, neglected hands show up clearly in that kind of photography. A proper manicure a few days before the wedding, not a rushed nail trim, makes a noticeable difference in how those photos turn out.
Body grooming, done properly, done early?
This is the part most grooms either skip entirely or handle badly at the last minute. If you’re doing any body grooming for the wedding, whether that’s a trim or something more thorough, do it at least a few days ahead, never the night before. Skin needs time to settle after grooming, and doing it too close to the event usually means dealing with irritation exactly when you don’t want to.
Does the wedding day itself need a plan too?
Between the ceremony, the reception, and however many functions come with it, you’re going to be under lights, in humidity, and photographed for hours straight. A little bit of prep here goes a long way. A light moisturizer so your skin doesn’t look flat under flash photography, a touch of styling product that holds without looking stiff, and if you’re prone to shine, blotting sheets tucked away somewhere for the day.
None of this needs to be complicated. It just needs to not be an afterthought.
The real mistake grooms make?
It’s not skipping any one step. It’s cramming everything into the final week and hoping it works out. Skin needs weeks to calm down and improve. Beards need weeks to grow into shape. Haircuts need a trial run to make sure they actually photograph the way you picture them. None of that fits into a rushed weekend before the wedding.
